In the field of modern aviation and industry, aluminum alloys are well-deserved star materials, and 7075 and 2024 aluminum alloys are the best among them. Origin

At the beginning of the 20th century, the aviation industry flourished, placing strict demands on the strength, weight and durability of materials. In 1931, the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) developed 2024 alloy, which uses copper as the main alloying element (containing 3.8%-4.9% copper), combined with magnesium (0.5%-1.2%) and manganese (0.3%-0.9%), etc.

It has excellent strength-to-weight ratio, good fatigue resistance and processing performance. It quickly became the darling of the aviation industry and was widely used in aircraft skins, wing structures, etc., replacing 2017-T4 alloy and laying the foundation for improving aircraft performance.

In 1943, Alcoa launched 7075 aluminum alloy, which belongs to the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu series of super-hard aluminum. Zinc is the main alloying element (5.1%-6.1%), combined with magnesium (2.1%-2.9%), chromium (0.18%-0.28%) and copper (1.2%-2.0%). After heat treatment, the strength is far higher than carbon steel, and it has good thermal conductivity, which can shorten the forming time and improve work efficiency.

Initially, it was mainly used to manufacture large bombers and fighters during World War II, such as the B-29 bomber, and became an important milestone in the development of 7xxx series aluminum alloys.

Evolution in the aviation field

In the subsequent development, 2024 aluminum alloy has been continuously optimized. By adjusting the heat treatment process, multiple states such as 2024-O, 2024-T3, and 2024-T4 have been produced.

7075 aluminum alloy has also undergone innovation. Although the early 7075-T6 state has high strength, it has low damage tolerance, poor corrosion resistance and fracture toughness, which limits its application in thick and large-section structures. To this end, researchers have developed 7075-T73, T76, T74, T651 and other states to optimize performance.

Application expansion

In the automotive industry, the demand for lightweight makes them popular. 2024 aluminum alloy is used to manufacture automobile wheels.
