What Are Aluminium Alloy 2024 t3 Mechanical Properties

Time:2025-11-14

The selection of aerospace materials has always been a balance between performance, safety, and cost. 2024 aircraft aluminum, based on aluminum and incorporating alloying elements such as copper, magnesium, and manganese, retains aluminum's lightweight properties (density only 2.78 g/cm³, about one-third that of steel) while alloying enhances strength and fatigue resistance, perfectly aligning with the aerospace industry's core requirement of "weight reduction without compromising quality."

1. High Strength

Aerospace structural components (such as wing spars and fuselage frames) must withstand lift during takeoff, turbulence during flight, and impact forces during landing, demanding extremely high strength. 2024T3 boasts a tensile strength exceeding 470 MPa and a yield strength reaching 325 MPa, far surpassing ordinary aluminum alloys. This performance means it can maintain morphological stability under immense loads, preventing plastic deformation or fracture, thus building a solid "first line of defense" for flight safety.

2. Moderate Plasticity

High strength is often accompanied by reduced plasticity, but 2024T3 achieves a balance between strength and plasticity through precise process control. Its elongation after fracture can reach over 10%, meeting the processing requirements of complex structural components such as rolling and forging.

Whether bent into the curved contours of an aircraft wing or machined into fuselage components with multiple connection holes, cracks are less likely to occur. This characteristic greatly reduces the processing difficulty of parts and improves production efficiency.

3. Excellent Fatigue Resistance

During their service life, aircraft undergo thousands of takeoff, flight, and landing cycles. Structural components are constantly under "cyclic loading," making them prone to fatigue failure. 2024T3 exhibits particularly outstanding fatigue resistance. Under alternating loads, its fatigue limit is far higher than that of ordinary aluminum alloys, ensuring the reliability of components throughout their service life. Data shows that under the same number of cycles, the fatigue damage of 2024T3 is only 1/3 that of ordinary aluminum-copper alloys.

Applications

Thanks to its superior mechanical properties, 2024T3 alloy has permeated multiple core areas of aerospace structures, becoming an all-around material "from details to critical components":

In fuselage structures, aluminium alloy 2024 T3 is used to manufacture reinforcing ribs and bulkheads for the fuselage skin. These components must support the weight of the fuselage and withstand the pressure of high air pressure differentials. 2024T3's high strength and fatigue resistance ensure that the fuselage will not deform or crack during long-term use, while its lightweight properties further reduce the fuselage's weight, improving fuel economy.

In the wing and tail regions, it is an even more crucial material. Wing spars are key components that bear lift, requiring both high strength and bending resistance. 2024T3's mechanical properties perfectly match this requirement. Similarly, the horizontal and vertical stabilizers of the tail rely on its stable performance to ensure the aircraft's flight attitude control. Furthermore, the excellent machinability of 2024T3 enables precise movement of the aircraft's flaps, ailerons, and other movable surfaces.

The 2024T3 is also widely used in aviation accessories. For example, components such as aircraft landing gear doors, engine nacelle support structures, and seat rails all require a balance between lightweight and high strength within a limited space. The 2024T3 precisely meets this requirement, reducing the impact of accessory weight on the overall aircraft performance while ensuring safety during use.
